Hungary Moves eVAT M2M Interface to Version 2.0 as January 2027 System Launch Approaches
Hungary's tax authority NAV switched its eVAT-M2M machine-to-machine interface to the new 2.0 XSD data structure in production from 3 August 2026, ahead of the full eVAT system's mandatory launch on 1 January 2027, when the legacy ÁNYK filing method is phased out.
Hungary's Nemzeti Adó- és Vámhivatal (NAV) — the national tax and customs administration — has moved its eVAT-M2M machine-to-machine interface onto a new data structure, another concrete step toward the mandatory launch of the full eVAT system on 1 January 2027.
What Changed on 3 August 2026
NAV published the eVAT-M2M interface specification version 2.0 and made it available in the test environment from July 2026, giving software developers time to validate against it. From 3 August 2026, NAV's production eVAT-M2M environment runs exclusively on the 2.0 XSD schema — systems integrating via the M2M connection must use the new data structure from that date forward. Version 2.0 adds more detailed tax-related field explanations than the prior version, intended to make the specification easier for developers to implement correctly.
What eVAT Is
eVAT is Hungary's new digital VAT return system, built to use data NAV already holds (largely from the existing RTIR real-time invoice reporting regime) to pre-populate and validate VAT returns, cutting manual entry and errors. It offers two submission routes:
- A web interface, aimed at smaller businesses with lower transaction volumes
- The M2M interface, aimed at businesses and accounting/ERP systems handling high volumes, now integrated via version 2.0
The 1 January 2027 Deadline
From 1 January 2027, eVAT becomes the required channel for VAT return submissions in Hungary. The legacy ÁNYK form-based filing program, which businesses have used for years, is being phased out and NAV has indicated it will remain usable only in limited cases after that date.
What Hungarian Businesses and Vendors Should Do Now
- If you or your accounting provider integrate via M2M, confirm your systems are already validating against the 2.0 XSD — the production environment no longer accepts the prior version
- If you currently file via ÁNYK, start evaluating eVAT's web interface or an M2M-capable accounting platform well before January 2027, since the fallback option is disappearing, not merely being deprioritized
- This is a VAT-return filing change, distinct from Hungary's existing RTIR real-time invoice reporting obligation, which continues unchanged
