Austria Prepares ebInterface 7.0 With Formal EN 16931 Syntax Binding

AUSTRIAPRO plans to release ebInterface 7.0 in Q4 2026, adding a formal EN 16931 syntax binding to Austria's domestic e-invoicing standard. The update is optional — no mandatory migration has been announced.

Austria's e-invoicing standard is due a technical update. AUSTRIAPRO, the e-billing working group of the Wirtschaftskammer Österreich (WKO) responsible for maintaining ebInterface, is planning to release ebInterface 7.0 in Q4 2026.

What's New

The central change is a formal syntax binding to EN 16931. Austria's current version, ebInterface 6.1 (published in 2022), already implements EN 16931's semantic data model, but without a formally normative mapping from the standard's abstract business terms (BT fields) and business rules (BR rules) to ebInterface's concrete XML schema. Version 7.0 adds that formal binding — matching what Factur-X, ZUGFeRD, and Peppol BIS 3.0 already have.

In practical terms, this mostly benefits software vendors and validation tooling: a normative binding reduces Austria-specific special-casing in invoice-generation logic and should improve compatibility with third-party EN 16931 validators.

Optional, Not Mandatory

AUSTRIAPRO has been explicit that no mandatory switch to 7.0 has been announced, and development is proceeding with backwards compatibility in mind. Businesses and software vendors currently on ebInterface 6.0 or 6.1 do not need to migrate on any fixed timeline.

Context: No B2B Mandate Yet

This update is unrelated to Austria's B2B e-invoicing question. As of August 2026, Austria still has no domestic B2B e-invoicing mandate — B2B structured invoicing remains voluntary, with a mandate under the EU's ViDA framework anticipated sometime in the 2027–2028 window but not yet formally proposed.

What Austrian Businesses Should Do Now

  • No immediate action required — continue using ebInterface 6.0/6.1 or Peppol BIS 3.0 for federal B2G invoicing as before
  • Software vendors and custom-integration builders should track the Q4 2026 schema release, since the formal EN 16931 binding may simplify long-term validation logic
