DATEV E-Invoicing Review 2025: Is It Right for Your German Business?
DATEV needs no introduction to anyone who has ever filed a German tax return or worked with a German Steuerberater. With over 4.5 million business customers and a presence in nearly every German tax advisory firm, DATEV is not just one accounting platform among many โ for many German businesses, it is the accounting infrastructure.
But how does it actually perform for XRechnung and ZUGFeRD e-invoicing compliance? And when does it make sense to use DATEV versus one of the cloud-native alternatives?

Who DATEV Is For (And Who It Is Not For)
DATEV is designed around the Steuerberater model โ the relationship between a German business and its tax advisor. The software is primarily accessed by the business's accountant, with the business owner using a lighter client-facing tool (DATEV Unternehmen Online) that syncs with the accountant's DATEV installation.
Use DATEV if:
- You already work with a Steuerberater who uses DATEV (the vast majority do)
- You need deep German tax compliance beyond just invoicing (ELSTER, USt-VA, GoBD archiving)
- You are a mid-size or larger SME with complex accounting needs
- Your Steuerberater handles your tax filing and you want seamless data handover
Consider alternatives if:
- You are a freelancer or very small business that manages your own accounting
- You do not have a Steuerberater or your advisor uses different software
- You want a modern, self-service cloud tool with a better UI
- Your primary need is invoicing, not full accounting
XRechnung Support
DATEV has comprehensive XRechnung 3.0 support across its main products:
- DATEV Mittelstand Faktura โ native XRechnung generation and validation
- DATEV Unternehmen Online โ XRechnung receiving and processing
- DATEV Kanzlei-Rechnungswesen โ used by tax advisors to process XRechnung from client businesses
The KoSIT validator confirms DATEV's XRechnung output is fully compliant. DATEV updated to XRechnung 3.0 (the schema changes from KoSIT in Q1 2026) in their Q1 2026 update โ cloud customers received it automatically.
Key XRechnung features:
- UBL 2.1 and UN/CEFACT CII output (both variants)
- Leitweg-ID field for B2G invoices
- Buyer reference field (BT-10) โ now mandatory in XRechnung 3.0
- Correct VAT exemption code handling
ZUGFeRD Support
DATEV generates ZUGFeRD 2.3 with the XRechnung profile โ the highest compliance level available. ZUGFeRD output has been validated against the EN 16931 standard.
Note: DATEV's ZUGFeRD support requires DATEV Mittelstand Faktura or higher. The basic invoicing module does not include ZUGFeRD output.
GoBD-Compliant Archiving
This is where DATEV genuinely excels. The DATEV DMS (Document Management System) provides:
- Tamper-proof 10-year invoice archiving
- Automatic import of XRechnung and ZUGFeRD files received
- GoBD-compliant audit trail for every document
- Integration with ELSTER for VAT reporting cross-reference
No third-party archive service is needed โ GoBD compliance is built into the DATEV ecosystem.
Peppol Support
DATEV has added Peppol BIS 3.0 support in 2026, primarily for cross-border invoicing and for businesses invoicing public-sector clients via the PEPPOL network. This is particularly relevant as Germany's government e-invoicing infrastructure increasingly uses Peppol alongside XRechnung.
Pricing
DATEV pricing is complex and depends on your Steuerberater relationship:
| Product | Monthly Cost (approx.) |
|---|---|
| DATEV Unternehmen Online (client) | โฌ30โโฌ90/month |
| DATEV Mittelstand Faktura | โฌ80โโฌ200/month |
| DATEV Kanzlei-Rechnungswesen (advisor) | Membership fee + module |
Businesses access DATEV through their Steuerberater โ the advisor typically bundles DATEV access into their service fee. Direct DATEV subscriptions are available but require DATEV membership.
What We Like
- Unmatched German compliance depth โ XRechnung, ZUGFeRD, GoBD, ELSTER all in one
- The Steuerberater connection โ seamless handover to your tax advisor, no manual exports
- Update quality โ DATEV updates for mandate changes (like XRechnung 3.0) are thorough and tested
- Scale โ works for a 10-person SME and a 500-person mid-market company equally
What Could Be Better
- Not self-service โ you typically need a DATEV-certified partner to access and configure it
- UI is dated โ DATEV's interface has not kept pace with modern cloud tools
- Pricing opacity โ getting a clear price without a quote is difficult
- Not for freelancers โ the complexity and cost are overkill for solo traders

Alternatives to Consider
- sevDesk โ Better UI, self-service, good for SMBs not tied to a DATEV advisor
- Lexware / lexoffice โ Haufe Group product with strong German compliance, more accessible pricing
- easybill โ Best for invoicing-focused freelancers and small businesses, native Peppol
Bottom Line
If you already work with a DATEV-using Steuerberater โ and most German businesses do โ DATEV is your default choice for XRechnung/ZUGFeRD compliance. The compliance depth and Steuerberater integration are unmatched.
If you manage your own accounting without a DATEV-using advisor, the modern cloud alternatives (sevDesk, Lexware, easybill) offer comparable compliance at lower complexity and cost.
