Italy E-Invoicing Service Providers: SDI Intermediaries, Peppol & EDI

Italy's FatturaPA ecosystem relies on a structured network of certified intermediaries, Peppol access points, and EDI providers. This guide explains the different types of providers, how they fit into the SDI architecture, and what to consider when choosing one.

Types of Service Providers in Italy

1. SDI Intermediaries (Intermediari Abilitati)

SDI intermediaries are entities registered with the Agenzia delle Entrate to transmit and receive e-invoices on behalf of other businesses. When you use invoicing software like Aruba, Fattura24, or TeamSystem, those companies are acting as your SDI intermediary.

Key characteristics:

  • Must be registered in the Agenzia delle Entrate's intermediary register
  • Assigned a unique Codice Destinatario for invoice routing
  • Responsible for SDI transmission reliability and error handling
  • Must maintain connectivity to the SDI infrastructure 24/7

Who they serve: Businesses of all sizes that want to outsource the technical SDI connectivity.

Major Italian SDI intermediaries:

  • Aruba S.p.A. โ€” largest by volume, free tier available
  • InfoCert S.p.A. โ€” strong in enterprise and PA markets, also a trust service provider
  • Actalis โ€” subsidiary of Aruba, focused on digital signatures and certified communications
  • TeamSystem โ€” specialised in SME and accounting firm workflows
  • Zucchetti โ€” enterprise ERP integration with native SDI

2. Peppol Access Points

For Italian businesses that also conduct cross-border B2B trade within the EU, Peppol access points provide interoperability with other EU countries' e-invoicing networks. Italy's SDI does not natively connect to foreign e-invoicing platforms โ€” Peppol is the bridge.

When you need a Peppol access point:

  • Invoicing EU public sector entities outside Italy that require Peppol BIS format
  • Trading with partners in Nordic countries (heavy Peppol users), the Netherlands, Belgium, or other countries with active Peppol mandates
  • Future-proofing for ViDA (VAT in the Digital Age) cross-border digital reporting requirements

Certified Italian Peppol Access Points (selection):

  • TeamSystem โ€” native Peppol alongside SDI in one platform
  • InfoCert โ€” full-service Peppol AP with SDI integration
  • OpenPeppol member providers โ€” see the OpenPeppol directory for Italy-registered APs

3. EDI Providers

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) providers serve businesses with high-volume, automated invoice flows โ€” typically retailers, manufacturers, and logistics companies with established trading partner networks.

EDI in the Italian context: Italy's FatturaPA mandate technically replaces traditional EDI invoicing for B2B transactions, but many large enterprises continue to use EDI for their broader order-to-cash and procure-to-pay processes. EDI providers in Italy typically offer FatturaPA as an output from their EDI message translation layer.

Key players offering EDI + FatturaPA:

  • Corevist / GXS / OpenText Trading Grid โ€” global EDI networks with Italian FatturaPA modules
  • Edicom โ€” Spanish-origin EDI provider with strong Italian FatturaPA coverage
  • Comarch โ€” CEE-headquartered, strong in Italian retail sector EDI
  • Seeburger โ€” German EDI/MFT platform with Italian SDI integration

4. BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) Providers

Some companies โ€” especially foreign multinationals setting up in Italy โ€” prefer to outsource their entire Italian invoicing process to a local BPO provider. The BPO handles FatturaPA generation, SDI transmission, incoming invoice processing, and conservazione on the client's behalf.

When BPO makes sense:

  • Foreign company with Italian operations but no Italian IT team
  • High-complexity invoicing (reverse charge, multiple VAT positions, PA invoicing)
  • Companies in the middle of an ERP migration who need a bridge solution

BPO providers active in the Italian market:

  • Seac โ€” accounting BPO with FatturaPA integration
  • Major accounting firms (KPMG, Deloitte, EY, PwC all offer Italian tax compliance BPO including e-invoicing)
  • Local Italian tax consultancy firms (commercialisti) with digital invoicing platforms

What to Ask When Choosing a Provider

For SDI Intermediaries

  1. Are they listed in the Agenzia delle Entrate intermediary register? You can verify at the official portal.
  2. What is their SLA for SDI transmission? Especially important for time-sensitive invoices with payment terms.
  3. How do they handle SDI rejection notifications? Can you resubmit from within the platform?
  4. Is conservazione sostitutiva included? And is the conservatore AccA-accredited?

For Peppol Access Points

  1. Are they registered as a Peppol AP? Check the Peppol directory.
  2. Do they support both sending AND receiving? Some access points only support one direction.
  3. Can they integrate with your existing SDI flow? The best Italian Peppol APs route Peppol documents through the SDI for Italian recipients.

For EDI Providers

  1. Do they support FatturaPA schema v1.2.2? Older EDI systems may lag behind schema updates.
  2. How is the mapping from your ERP data maintained? Schema updates from Agenzia delle Entrate require regular mapping adjustments.

Conservazione Sostitutiva Providers

Separate from invoicing intermediaries, some businesses use standalone conservazione sostitutiva services. These are regulated by AgID (Agenzia per l'Italia Digitale) and must be accredited.

Finding an accredited conservatore: Check the AgID accredited conservatori list for current certified providers.

Key accredited names include:

  • Aruba PEC (conservazione service)
  • InfoCert
  • Namirial
  • Actalis
  • Digital PA (focused on public administration)
