Austria's e-invoicing standard is getting a technical refresh. AUSTRIAPRO, the WKO subsidiary that maintains ebInterface, is preparing ebInterface 7.0 for release in Q4 2026. If you invoice Austrian public bodies, here's what's actually changing — and why you likely don't need to do anything yet.
What's Changing
The headline feature is a formal syntax binding to EN 16931. Austria's current version, ebInterface 6.1 (published 2022), already implements EN 16931's semantic data model — but it does so without a formally normative mapping between the European standard's abstract business terms (BT fields) and business rules (BR rules) and ebInterface's concrete XML schema. Version 7.0 closes that gap, matching the kind of formal alignment that Factur-X, ZUGFeRD, and Peppol BIS 3.0 already have with EN 16931.
In practice, this is mostly a benefit for software vendors and validation tooling: a formal binding reduces Austria-specific special-casing in invoice-generation software and should make third-party EN 16931 validation tools more directly compatible with ebInterface output.
Is This Mandatory?
No. AUSTRIAPRO has explicitly stated that no mandatory switch to 7.0 has been announced, and development is being carried out with backwards compatibility in mind. If your software currently generates ebInterface 6.0 or 6.1, there is no forced migration — both remain valid for Austrian B2G invoicing.
What Hasn't Changed
Two things worth reaffirming, since ebInterface updates sometimes get conflated with bigger regulatory news:
- Austria still has no domestic B2B e-invoicing mandate. As of August 2026, structured B2B invoicing between Austrian businesses remains entirely voluntary. Industry expectations point to a B2B mandate arriving under the EU's ViDA framework sometime in the 2027–2028 window, but nothing has been formally announced.
- The B2G mandate itself is unchanged. Suppliers to Austrian federal government agencies still must submit structured invoices via ebInterface or Peppol BIS 3.0, as they have since 2014/2018 respectively — see our complete Austria regulations guide for the full picture.
What to Do Now
- If you invoice Austrian public bodies today: no action needed. Continue using ebInterface 6.0/6.1 or Peppol BIS 3.0 as you do now.
- If you're a software vendor or building a custom ebInterface integration: worth tracking the Q4 2026 release and AUSTRIAPRO's published schema once available, since the formal EN 16931 binding may simplify your validation logic going forward.
- If you're watching for a B2B mandate: this update is unrelated to that question — don't read ebInterface 7.0 as a signal that a B2B mandate is imminent.
