Peppol Expands EU Network: What It Means for Cross-Border B2B Invoicing in 2026
OpenPeppol has expanded its European network, making it easier for businesses in Germany, Italy, France, and beyond to exchange structured invoices across borders.
Peppol (Pan-European Public Procurement On-Line) started as a government procurement network but has evolved into a critical infrastructure for cross-border B2B e-invoicing across Europe.
What Is Peppol?
Peppol is a standardised framework for electronic document exchange. Think of it as the "postal system" for structured invoices: each participant gets a Peppol ID, and accredited access points can send and receive compliant documents on their behalf.
The 2026 Expansion
OpenPeppol (the non-profit governing body) announced expanded certification for German and Italian providers in 2025. As of 2026:
- Over 380 certified access points operate across the EU
- Germany: Peppol is required for B2G invoices and increasingly adopted for B2B
- Italy: Peppol sits alongside SDI for cross-border transactions
- France: Peppol integration is built into the planned Chorus Pro successor
Why This Matters for SMEs
Previously, cross-border e-invoice exchange required bilateral agreements or expensive EDI connections. Peppol standardises this: if both parties have a Peppol ID and an accredited access point, they can exchange compliant invoices in minutes.
